Which Way is North? Use your watch to find out.

If it is a sunny day, and you have a watch that is reasonably on time, you can locate directions by following these steps:

Hold your watch with the flat surface parallel to the ground. Keeping it parallel to the ground, rotate it until the hour hand points in the general direction of the Sun.

In the morning, south lies about halfway between the hour hand and twelve o’clock, measuring clockwise.

In the afternoon, south lies about halfway between the hour hand and twelve o’clock measuring counter clockwise.

North, of course, will be on the same line, in the opposite direction. This method isn’t entirely accurate, but if you are wondering which way to turn at a highway crossroads, foe example, it may serve to give you the appropriate direction you need.

There have been a couple of ocassions when this has come in handy for me when I explore a new road going some where. It really works. Only one ocassion did I use it while out walking on a trail (it wasn’t that I was lost or anything).

Although I do not considere myself directionally challenged and having practiced this technique more than 10 times now I feel confident that knowing this direction finding technique will get me out of future lost situations. Hope it will help you also.
