The roar of engines and the smell of exhaust are what the visitors and watchers of the Minden Ice Car Racing will experience at the Minden fairgrounds on the morning of January 23 as banged-up Chevys and old Volkswagens navigated their way around a track of sheer ice.

The Magnum Ice Race Series is hosted by the Ontario Region of the Canadian Automobile Sports Club (CASC) and will continue over the next five weekends.

The whole Ontario series is run in Minden and Racers come here from all over the province from as far away as North Bay and Ottawa.

Two hoours North of Toronto Ontarion approximately 100 ice car racers will made their way to Minden on Saturday and Sunday starting January 23, 2010.

This weekend will be the first racing weekend of the 2010 CASC season. The season runs for 5 weeks and longer if the winter cold holds out.

Ice racing is a sport enjoyed by young and old alike and requires a special licence I think. Car race around a specially prepared kidney shaped ice track in cars prepared specially for safety in the ice racing sport;

For the spectator the races are free to watch and will be taking place at the Minden fairgrounds for each of the next five weekends beginning at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.

We (Jan and Sally) accommodate many drivers and spectators at the Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast.

Guests who come for 2 nights receive a hardy House Dinner for no charge on their arrival night. If you are up for the adventure tell us you are into watching or participating in the Ice Car Racing and we will discuss the rates appropriate for you. the Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast is an 8 minute drive from Minden village. Haliburton Folk Camp

Filed under: Activities in the Highlands,Jan Feb Mar — Sally at 12:47 am on Thursday, January 7, 2010

The Haliburton County Folk Society invites you to join us for a long weekend (Friday afternoon to Monday afternoon), one of a kind Folk Music experience for adults in the Haliburton Highlands. Winter Folk Camp II is very similar to our first Camp in March of 2009 except that Camp II is one day longer. We have also added another “stream” by providing beginner and advanced guitar classes.

The Camp is again being held at YMCA Wanakita near Haliburton, Ontario and is intended to be a late winter, affordable get-away with lots of music (concerts, classes, workshops, song circles, jamming and so on) in pleasant wooded surroundings with wonderful camaraderie, comfortable accommodations and great food.

The program has been designed to engage novice players, more experienced musicians and interested, but not particularly musical, Folk Music devotees. A weekend with us and those dreaded February “blahs” will be banished for another year!

The Winter Folk Camp program includes classes and workshops on Saturday and Sunday morning and afternoon and on Monday morning
There will be evening concerts/ceilidhs on Saturday and Sunday featuring our Artists in Residence and showcasing some of our wonderful local talent.
Time has been left for a variety of complimentary outside activities (cross country skiing, snowshoeing, hiking etc.) and for jamming, snoozing or anything else you may wish to do.
