The Forest Festival Announces 2011 Concert Line Up at Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve
Wednesday August 17 – Sunday August 21, 2011
“A rich mixture of the performing and visual arts within
the incomparable wilderness beauty of Haliburton Forest.”

Haliburton Highlands, Ontario – Fabulous musical artists, performing in a spectacular wilderness setting, this is The Forest Festival (www.theforestfestival.com).

Opening the evening of Wednesday August 17, 2011, this annual festival of open-air concerts that links nature, ecology and music, will run for 5 days and feature seven unique musical performances. The 2011 concerts will be held at two venues in Haliburton Forest — the stunning, lakeside amphitheatre that overlooks serene and isolated Bone Lake, and at the historic Logging Museum located at Base Camp. Once again, Haliburton Forest & Wild Life Reserve (www.haliburtonforest.com) , located in Haliburton, Ontario, will host this popular outdoor concert series, providing a stunning stage of majestic forests and sparkling lakes for the extraordinary Canadian musicians and artists that are scheduled to perform.

Wednesday, August 17, Bone Lake Amphitheatre 8:00pm
John Terauds of The Toronto Star has written “TorQ Percussion Quartet can stand proud among the growing throng of chamber percussion ensembles around the world.” TorQ constructs a world of sound based on rhythm, with virtuosic command of a bewildering variety of plucked, struck and even bowed instruments from around the globe.

Thursday, August 18, Bone Lake Amphitheatre 8:00pm
Bluegrass is irresistible, feel-good acoustic music and The Spinney Brothers are the real deal, with a list of East Coast bluegrass and country awards as long as your arm. They play music that matters, directly from their heart to yours.

Friday, August 19, Bone Lake Amphitheatre 8:00pm
Russell deCarle has a great voice-a familiar voice that’s helped Prairie Oyster round up four number one country hits over the years, several gold and platinum CDs plus Juno and Canadian Country Music Awards. He will be accompanied by ace guitarist Steve Briggs and accordion whiz Denis Kelkie.
Saturday, August 20, Historic Logging Museum 2:00pm
At age seventeen Patricia O’Callaghan decided she should become an opera singer (she previously couldn’t decide whether to become a rock star or a nun). Today, she is your ideal introduction to the world of cabaret-a world that Billboard Magazine, reviewing one of her discs, called “serious but satirical, seamy yet sophisticated…..” With Greg Oh, piano and Joe Phillips, bass.
Saturday, August 20, Historic Logging Museum 8:00pm
Once again, Saturday night means party night at The Forest Festival. Grooveyard, a sizzling and soulful Toronto band with an eclectic repertoire, draws heavily on classic funk and soul, reggae, disco, jazz and ’80′s new wave. This outfit puts a distinctive stamp on the music it performs-and on your feet, which will hurt in the morning…

Sunday, August 21, Historic Logging Museum 2:00pm
Dave Young (with Kevin Turcotte, trumpet; Robi Botos, piano, Reg Schwager, guitar; Terry Clarke, drums) is a quiet, deferential man with a twinkle in his eye. But with a deeply burnished double bass fiddle in his hands he can suddenly and miraculously channel the true and authentic spirit of jazz. He’s a multiple winner of National Jazz Award’s “Bassist of the Year” and has been named Member of The Order of Canada. Come to the concert. Sit close.

Sunday, August 21, Historic Logging Museum 5:00pm
The doors will be wide open and admission free when Porkbelly Futures founder and multi-instrumentalist Stuart Laughton (no stranger to The Forest Festival) steps forward to sing from his constantly evolving collection of favourite songs. Threatening to steal the show at all times will be master pedal steel guitarist Burke Carroll and the incomparable Dave Young on bass.
Sunday, August 21, Bone Lake Amphitheatre 8:00pm
“Canada’s ambassadors of musical diversity”, Sultans of String, perform fiery violin dances with rumba guitar while a funk bass lays down an unstoppable groove. Six-string violinist and bandleader Chris McKhool, along with 4 other virtuosic musicians on bass, percussion and guitar complete an ensemble that comes as close as any to embracing “the world in one band.”

In addition, come and explore The Land Art Project, a site-specific wilderness
art installation along forest trails just north of the Haliburton Forest Base Camp,
curated by renowned artist, Reinhard Reitzenstein.

The Bluegrass Bands attending the First Minden Hills Bluegrass FestivalThe Spinney

Brothers From the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia, Canada, the Spinney Brothers are comprised of Allan Spinney , Rick Spinney, Gary Dalrymple and Darryl Hebb.

Brothers Allan and Rick debuted their band in 1992, showcasing a tight brother duet vocal style that was immediately recognized for it’s energetic and distinctive sound.

The cornerstone of the Spinney Brothers musical identity is the sound of traditional, southern-flavoured bluegrass music. The first generation bluegrass legends have been an important musical influence, yet their music is equally shaped by their personal lives and local heritage. By incorporating original material, which draws from various sources, the Spinney Brothers effortlessly intertwine the past with the present.

General Store has played venues from huge concert halls to intimate churches, and pleases everywhere they go. Their music is being played on radio stations from North America to Europe.

The Minden Agricultural Society and the Minden Legion are delighted to introduce you to the 2011 Minden Hills Bluegrass Festival. Thank you for your interest and inquiry in coming to Minden Hills in the Haliburton Highlands Ontario (2.5 hours North of Toronto in Cottage Country) to hear some of the finest Bluegrass Music anywhere, with bands coming from all over Ontario and as far away as Nova Scotia.

The Minden Fair Grounds (which this year will host the 147th Haliburton County Fair) is an excellent venue for our Festival with lots of room for parking, rough camping, lawn chairs, a great food service facility, lots of room for vendors and waste facilities for trailers.

This is the first Minden Hills Bluegrass Festival we have drawn on the “Bluegrass depth” of many to ensure that the weekend is enjoyable and a memorable experience.

Imagine being able to stand on a state of the art twin segment standing lift which allows mountain bike enthusiasts to ride to the top of a hill in relative comfort. This state of the art covered magic surface lift will easily and efficiently transport beginners up to the half way point of the hill or eventually all the way to the top. Once in place this lift will operate every day to move downhill and cross country mountain bikers up the hill rain or shine. The riders will simply step onto the carpet while holding onto the bike at their side. What makes this lift unique is the domed Plexiglas cover. It will protect riders from harsh winds and snow in winter and offer a climate controlled peaceful and user friendly atmosphere year round. All these dreams are in the near future of the Sir Sam’s Ski and Summer Program.

This dream of future magic carpets will soon be in place; however, for now the Quad chair at Sir Sam’s Ski Hill transports bikes and people to the top of the hill. And the mountain biking summer season is ope the Victoria Day Long Weekend. The quad chair will be operating fir scenic tour rides and for the downhill mountain bike riders to access the new trails. Also Sir Sam’s has been busy upgrading their already comprehensive series of trails with some new tweaks and peaks.
Sir Sam’s now offers riders the choice of 10 km of cross country and 6 km of downhill riding for all level of riders. The newly cut 1,5 km gravity run winds down the hill snake like offers banked turns, whoops and berms that will excite all riders. Also new are 2 km of single and double black diamond downhill runs through hardwood forests and over rock face drop off that will challenge intermediate and experienced riders. The quad chairlift operates five days a week (Wednesday through Sunday) to transport bike and rider to the top of the hill. And there are plenty of jumps, woops and berms for younger or less experienced riders.

Algonquin Outfitters has teamed up with Sir Sam’s and offers bike rental, repair and retail outlet for clothing, accessories and bike sales.
The Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast is approximately a 40 minute drive to the Mountain Biking hills of Sir Sam’s.

We would be happy to have you stay with us at the Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast as you explore cycling and mountain biking in the Haliburton Highlands.
