This dream of future magic carpets will soon be in place; however, for now the Quad chair at Sir Sam’s Ski Hill transports bikes and people to the top of the hill. And the mountain biking summer season is ope the Victoria Day Long Weekend. The quad chair will be operating fir scenic tour rides and for the downhill mountain bike riders to access the new trails. Also Sir Sam’s has been busy upgrading their already comprehensive series of trails with some new tweaks and peaks.
Sir Sam’s now offers riders the choice of 10 km of cross country and 6 km of downhill riding for all level of riders. The newly cut 1,5 km gravity run winds down the hill snake like offers banked turns, whoops and berms that will excite all riders. Also new are 2 km of single and double black diamond downhill runs through hardwood forests and over rock face drop off that will challenge intermediate and experienced riders. The quad chairlift operates five days a week (Wednesday through Sunday) to transport bike and rider to the top of the hill. And there are plenty of jumps, woops and berms for younger or less experienced riders.

Algonquin Outfitters has teamed up with Sir Sam’s and offers bike rental, repair and retail outlet for clothing, accessories and bike sales.
The Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast is approximately a 40 minute drive to the Mountain Biking hills of Sir Sam’s.

The 22nd Haliburton Highland’s Games are scheduled for Saturday July 10, 2010 Gates open at 9 am in the Head Lake Park Haliburton Village in the Haliburton Highlands Ontario. This day is full of “food, music and large men throwing stuff”!

Other activities massed band presentation, heavy events competition, border clooie sheep herding, highland dancing competition and a cheer tent. New for 2010 the OPP canine demonstration and children’s program by Camp Wanakita.

Ontario Family Fishing Day had been extended to family fishing week. It now runs for nine days, including 2 weekends, from July 3 to July 11, 2010. During that time Canadian residents, following conservation license regulations, can fish in Ontario’s waters (where fishing is permitted) without having to purchase a fishing license. Visit our National Historic Site. View the displays of artifacts and learn of the fine contribution of Red Cross Nurses in providing health and medical services for over four decades.

The Wilberforce Red Cross Outpost & Historic House is the site of the first Red Cross Outpost Hospital in Ontario, as well as the first hospital of any kind in Haliburton County and its surrounding area. It was declared a National Historic Site of Canada in 2003.

The Red Cross Outpost opened in 1922 and was operated by live-in nurses until 1957. It then continued to serve various community and medical services until 1963.

Special events and displays related to Outpost and Community history are organized regularly by the Wilberforce Heritage Guild. Please visit the Gallery to view past examples and check the Events listing for upcoming activities.

The Historic House Museum is preserved, organized and operated by the Wilberforce Heritage Guild 1991®, a Volunteer Charitable Group and is owned and supported by the Municipality of Highlands East in the Haliburton Highlands.

The building was designated as a National Historic Site in September 2003 by the Canadian Minister of Heritage, the Honourable Sheila Copps. At a ceremony on August 15, 2006 the National Historic Site plaque was unveiled.
