One of the reasons I came to Sunny Rock was to collect monarch caterpillars. I found quite a few on Ingoldsby. My 18 year old daughter has a good eye for finding them. There was a good supply of milkweed for me to feed the caterpillars. I brought in plastic terrariums. It was a good few days, as all my eggs hatched into baby caterpillars. The highlight was the birth of a monarch. I let it go two and a half hours after it was born and it posed on the orange lilies for a photo shoot with Sally and Jan.

Frank & I went for a walk across the dam and went out and sat on the rocks, watched the little fish, waited patiently for Oscar [the osprey] to come out of the tree but alas he didn’t. He watched us & we watched him from below.

While sitting & chatting Frank noticed an otter to the east of us. Cute as a button, he was just having a great time playing in the shallows. Totally unconcerned about us. Frank moved over to take his picture which went well. As we left to go back on our walk the seagulls came back with the ducks and I’m sure Oscar was happy to see us go so he could get some lunch. The otter disappeared not to be seen for the rest of our sitting time. It was glorious!! The Best.

Hospitality flows deep at the Sunny Rock Bed and Breakfast. The river sang her best songs for us, with quiet cadences at night for restful dreams, and more joyful dances at day to soothe and bring forth smiles. The beaver family displayed their synchronized diving talents, and puzzled us with a life so different from our own. Rivergull stood watch on her rock, as though charged with Mistress of Ceremonies duties this day. Harriet the Heron performed graceful arabesques above, and in dusk and dawn, the bats provided comic relief with their frantic flapping loonie loops.

The rocks steadied us; trees shaded and swayed with the freshening breezes. The quiet here is healing. Inside the house is graciousness, calm, and a spirit of playfulness. Every need is asked after. Welcome permeates the walls. Even the ceilings are delightfully lovely.

I could live on this verandah, sun streaming, river song plunging, rocks thrumming their ancient song. And after, a soothing steam shower, a roll on the floor with a smiling dog, and delightful company and conversation. Then an hour of peace in front of the fire with my love, and to bed – looking ahead to another day, near future or far, on the verandah watching the dance & hearing the healing song of this heart’s haven.

Awoke early, made coffee & went out on the deck to watch Harriot the Heron fish. Out of the corner of my eye a black furry shape distracted me. Looked down and there’s a bear below the cabin at the edge of the reeds. He(She) was a teenager by size, looked around for a few minutes and turned & disappeared. I don’t think he saw me, just didn’t want to get paws muddy. Amazing! Oh, the Heron caught a fish, put his head up and swallowed his(her) breakfast in one gulp. Going for mine now. What a great place Sunny Rock is!

My husband & I went fishing yesterday. We went on the rocks to the left of the Scotts Dam. Not anticipating catching anything we took our “green” worms. (No kidding they are plastic lime green). Line in the water and “BAM” caught a fish. “Bass”. My husband caught a fish. Then it was 2 hours of one fish after another. My husband caught 3-4 lb. bass, mine was about 2 ½ lbs. ( I figure mine was larger, but I let him think otherwise.)

Today we were on the deck having coffee, listening to the rapids, watching the rain. The Harriot the Heron was basking in the rain. Approx. 24 starling birds were swarming & swooping over the head of the Heron. He was oblivious to them. They seemed to be waiting for him to catch breakfast. It continued to rain. I love the rain. We are getting ready to go fishing again. This place is AMAZING. I am coming back to Sunny Rock again to see our “friends”.

We needed a break from the hustle and bustle of life in general and found it here at Sunny Rock B & B. Love the scenic surroundings and the cozy, comfortable room as well as the ambiance on the main floor lounge area with all the comfy chairs, couches and many windows to look out on the outdoors. Great food, accommodating hosts, lively conversations and many a book to provide restful entertainment. Thank you for our tour of Pine Studio and enjoyed playing the player piano and singing “under the boardwalk” & “lean on me” with Sally. What fun!
To top it all off we saw two beavers and the majestic Blue Heron. Fascinating!
Look forward to coming back in July!
